Es ist zu unterscheiden zwischen gewolltem und ungewolltem N. Beim gewollten N. sind Buchbestand und physischer Bestand deckungsgleich, beim ungewollten N. hingegen nicht. Bei der permanenten Inventur wird das „Ereignis“; N. oftmals als Anstoß genommen, eine Inventur für diesen Platz oder Artikel durchzuführen, um den Zähl- oder Erfassungsaufwand auf ein Minimum zu reduzieren.
